Cannabis tinctures have become valuable medicine for many. Making your own cannabis tincture empowers the cannabis consumer to explore a dosage, method, and carrier oil that suits you specifically.
How to Make a Cannabis Tincture: Ingredients
As mentioned, both CBD and THC tinctures will be covered and the ingredients vary slightly for each tincture.
CBD Tincture:
- A gram of CBD isolate
- 350 ml of carrier substance (MCT oil, grain alcohol, grapeseed oil, vinegar etc.)
THC Tincture:
- 10 grams of cannabis
- 350 ml of carrier substance (MCT oil, grain alcohol, grapeseed oil, vinegar etc.)
As you can see, the ingredients required to make your own cannabis tinctures are simple and there is no filler ingredient whatsoever.
How to Make CBD Isolate Tincture With MCT Oil
Using CBD isolate in a tincture does not require decarboxylation because this substance has already experienced this process through extraction. At 99% cannabidiol, CBD isolate is a strong substance, suitable for medical use.
Just 1 gram of CBD isolate will contain 990mg+ of CBD in total and 1 gram is all that is needed to make this CBD tincture. Although CBD isolate is harder to come by than most cannabis flower, this type of tincture can become an incredibly convenient way to ingest CBD on a regular basis.
This tincture can be made with grain alcohol, vinegar, and other oils such as grapeseed, MCT, etc.
For this CBD tincture recipe, MCT oil will be used.
- In the glass bowl or measuring jug, add CBD isolate and MCT oil
- Fill the crockpot with enough water to reach the halfway point of your measuring cup/jug
- Place crockpot/slow cooker on medium-low heat and wait until the water has heated
- Now, place the measuring cup of CBD and oil into the water within the crockpot/slow cooker
- You can cover this infusion, although it is not necessary.
- Ensure the water does not get too low during the infusion process, some water will evaporate
- Leave in the crockpot/slow cooker for 3-4 hours
- Stir every hour or so
- Line a hand strainer with cheesecloth (3-4 pieces on top of one another) and strain the oil into a mason jar
- Once cooled, fill the dropper and store the remaining tincture in a dark and cool place within an airtight mason jar
- Store safely away from pets and children
- The dropper provides an incredibly convenient option to consume CBD regularly
That is all that is takes to make 10 droppers’ worth of CBD tincture. Although CBD isolate can sometimes reach $75-$90 per gram, this is usually around the same price as two CBD tinctures.
With this recipe, ten 35ml bottles of CBD tinctures can be made for the (approximate) price of two.
How to Make a THC Cannabis Tincture With MCT Oil
The method for a THC cannabis tincture is similar to the CBD tincture, however, decarboxylation is required when using raw cannabis in infusions. Decarboxylation can be achieved with several different methods (mason jar, sous vide etc). Decarboxylation is a necessary process when using cannabis flower material in infusions and oils.
With that being said, here is our easy method for a THC tincture made with MCT oil:
- In the glass bowl or measuring jug, add decarboxylated cannabis and MCT oil
- Fill the crockpot with enough water to reach the halfway point of your measuring cup/jug
- Place crockpot/slow cooker on medium-low heat and wait until the water has heated
- Now, place the measuring cup of decarboxylated cannabis and MCT oil into the water within the crockpot/slow cooker
- You can cover this infusion, although it is not necessary.
- Ensure the water does not get too low during the infusion process, some water will evaporate
- Leave in the crockpot/slow cooker for 3-4 hours
- Stir every hour or so
- Line a hand strainer with cheesecloth (3-4 pieces on top of one another) and strain the cannabis-infused MCT oil into a mason jar
- Once cooled, fill the dropper and store the remaining tincture in a dark and cool place within an airtight mason jar
- Store safely away from pets and children
- The dropper provides an incredibly convenient option to consume THC regularly
How to Make a Cannabis Tincture With Grain Alcohol or Vinegar
Grain alcohol tinctures are somewhat easier than MCT tinctures, however, the time to make one properly varies from 10 days (minimum) to one month (recommended). The ingredients are the same as the MCT tinctures above, and any other equipment that is needed is mentioned below within the recipe.
